Why OA self-management is so important

There may not be a cure for osteoarthritis, but that doesn’t mean you’re out of options.

Living with the condition, learning what you can about it, and how to manage symptoms on your own is what self-management is all about.

Here’s how the ArthCoach app was designed to integrate elements of self-management into your daily life.

  • Soak up OA info
Becoming educated about OA is a very important first step. You can discover ways to cope with your symptoms and make lifestyle changes that may reduce pain, and improve joint function, and even elevate your mood.

Make ArthCoach your go-to knee OA resource, and get access to loads of practical, to-the-point information.

Find the answers to common questions like:

  • What is knee osteoarthritis?
  • What are the common OA symptoms?
  • What are risk factors for developing OA?
  • Why is my OA so painful?
  • Will my OA ever get better?
  • Will my OA spread to other joints, such as my hips?

In addition to the info you can find on the ArthCoach app, you can also visit our website to fill in any knowledge gaps you might have about OA or living with the condition.

  • Physical activity plays an important role
It might seem intuitive to give a painful joint some rest, but this is a common misconception. In fact, not getting enough movement can cause muscle weakness, and worsen joint pain and stiffness.

The right kinds of physical activity (light or moderate, low impact, strengthening and flexibility exercises) protects joints by strengthening the muscles around them, increasing blood flow to the joint, and helping promote normal joint regeneration. Physical activity can also improve mood and lessen pain.

Check out the exercises in the ArthCoach app to explore low impact endurance exercises, strength training exercises, and flexibility training exercises.
  • Take an active role
Instead of sitting back and feeling as if you have no control over OA, you can play an active role in your treatment. Developing relaxation and coping skills, for example, can help you feel balanced, give you a greater feeling of control over OA, and result in a more positive outlook.

Whether it’s through weight management, cooking, exercising, or trying new treatment options, you won’t regret becoming involved in your OA management.
