How to use ArthCoach: Your free knee osteoarthritis (OA) management app

If you haven’t already downloaded ArthCoach, now’s the time to do so and take charge of your knee OA) journey.

This free, personalized coach in a convenient mobile app is designed to help make your OA journey easier. Keep track of your knee health, share progress reports with your doctor, find practical information, and more!

The health data you enter is completely optional. This info remains strictly within the app on your device and is password-protected. It’s private and isn’t shared externally, unless you choose to send info to your healthcare provider(s).

How do I set up and use the ArthCoach app?

Register in 3 simple steps.

  1. Input your name & choose a personal identification number (PIN) code to access app
  2. Add your healthcare professional’s details to share your results (optional)
  3. Personalize your notifications

How do I navigate through the ArthCoach app?

Navigating through ArthCoach is easy.

At the bottom of your phone screen, you’ll see the following menu pointing you to the sections of the app.

  • Tap ‘Home’ to go to the main page of the app.
  • Tap ‘Pain’ to track your OA knee pain.
  • Tap ‘Activity’ to find helpful knee exercises.
  • Tap ‘OA info’ to find practical information about osteoarthritis.
  • Tap ‘Consult’ to schedule or edit a medical appointment reminder.

Where can I find knee OA exercises?

Physical activity is an important part of self-managing OA.

Here’s the process for accessing the exercises for knee OA on the app:

  1. Choose the ACTIVITY icon from your Menu, and tap + to add
  2. The first time you access the exercises, you’ll need to read the Before Starting Exercise info. (In the future, this won’t appear.) Once you do, scroll down and check the I AGREE box.
  3. From there, you can select:
    • One Low Impact Endurance exercise
    • Three Strength Training exercises
    • One Flexibility Training exercise
  4. Press the play icon to watch an exercise video
  5. Log the duration of your exercise

How do I access info about knee OA?

Knowledge is power, and that’s certainly true when you’re living with OA of the knee.

To get helpful information about osteoarthritis, simply choose the OA Info icon from your Menu.

You can then select information by topic, including:

  • Knee osteoarthritis
  • Knee osteoarthritis management
  • Lifestyle & exercise
  • Sports & osteoarthritis

How do I track my knee pain over time?

It may not seem helpful, but tracking your knee pain and OA progression over time can be extremely informative for you and your healthcare providers. ​

It can help you make informed decisions about what course of treatment to take, review what hasn’t worked in the past, and what has.

Here’s how you can register your knee pain to see its evolution over time in the app:

  1. Choose the PAIN (target icon) from you main menu, then press + to add.
  2. Select the LEFT and/or RIGHT KNEE, and enter the DATE.
  3. Select your Pain level for that DATE by sliding the button on the pain scale. You can choose anywhere from the far left for low pain, to the far right for high pain.
  4. Answer the question below the pain scale to categorize specify how this pain compares to usual.
  5. Type in the circumstances or activity that resulted in this pain (e.g. jogging, stair climbing, etc.).
  6. Enter the Pain DURATION, MEDICATION & weight

How do I set medical appointment alerts?

Setting alerts and receiving reminders of your upcoming medical visits can be especially helpful for a progressive condition like osteoarthritis.

  1. First, from the home screen, tap the SETTINGS icon.
  2. Tap ‘My Physicians’ and input the contact information of your healthcare professional. (You can skip this step if you’ve already completed it during the app set-up.)
  3. From the main menu, choose the CONSULTATIONS (calendar icon).
  4. Then, hit tap to add, and complete the appointment details to set the appointment reminder.

That’s it, you’re done!
